Peter Lewis Benner

Augusta-Peter L. Benner, 70, died June 6, 2006, following a brief illness at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

Peter was born in Gardiner on January 21, 1936 the son of Julie and Lewis Benner.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the military police. Peter also worked in law enforcement for 32 years in Augusta. He retired in 1998 from Progressive Distributors as Chief of Security.

Peter was an avid gardener. He enjoyed raising animals and was an expert horseman. Peter spent his life surrounded by people, animals and children that he loved and who loved him. He worshipped his two dogs Simon and Bear who are lost without him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Betty of West Gardiner, stepsons Leigh Gagnon of Florida, Mark Benner of Gardiner, stepdaughter Michelle Carnahan of Tennessee and grandson Jason Carnahan of Tennessee. He is also survived by two honorary granddaughters Ashley Wark and Jessica Harris of Augusta who gave him unlimited love and joy, three brothers Eugene Benner, Walter Curtis and George Curtis.

Over the years he has touched many lives. He loved people and was always trying to help others. Peter will be missed by many and remembered by his sense of humor and giving nature. At his request there will be no funeral services. There will be a private graveside burial at a later date.
