Richard E. Small

Readfield – Richard E. Small, 65, died suddenly on Fri., Oct. 5, 2007 at a local hospital. Born on Jan. 26, 1942 in Augusta, he was the son of Richard V. and Rosalie Best Small.

A 1960 graduate of Cony High School, Small was a member of the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. During the 1959 season, he was the starting quarterback for the Rams’ football team, and he and teammate Larry Coughlin were known as the “touchdown twins.”

Small was a graduate of the University of Maine. He devoted his career to teaching science at Jay Junior High School.

Following his retirement, Small scouted Maine baseball players for the Major League Scouting Bureau. In addition, he closely followed high school and college athletics of all sorts, especially Bowdoin College athletics. He was a fixture at his grandchildren’s sports events.

Small is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Michelle A. Small and Jeffrey M. Sullivan of Brunswick, and Melinda J. (Small) and John P. Caterine of Freeport; four grandchildren, Winston M. and Lincoln N. Sullivan, and Avery J. and Lexie M. Caterine; three brothers, William F. Small and wife Joyce (Holmes) of Augusta, James B. Small of Augusta, and Edward C. Small and wife Peggy (Turmelle) of Washington, CT; one sister, Katherine L. Small of Bath; several nephews and nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Readfield – A memorial service for Richard E. Small, who died on Fri., Oct. 5, is scheduled to take place on Sun., Nov. 4, at 2:00 p.m. The service will be held at Kents Hill School’s Liz Cross Mellen Lodge near the intersection of Routes 17 and 41. A reception will follow the service. All of Dick’s family members and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bread of Life Ministries, Inc.
