Roland W. Alexander
South Gardiner-ROLAND WASHBURN ALEXANDER, 92,of River Ave. Lost his battle with cancer on Dec. 26. 2008 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.
He was born March 12, 1916 in Richmond, Maine, the son of George Alvah Alexander and Cordelia “Mae” (Beedle) Alexander.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Marion B. Trott, on December 31, 1937 in South Gardiner, Maine. They made their home in South Gardiner for their 68 years of married life. Marion predeceased Roland on Dec. 25, 2005.
Roland was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Alvah B. Alexander; a sister, Marie Moulton; a brother, Jay S. Alexander; a brother, Bernard C. Alexander.
He was educated at number 5 school on the Beedle Road and graduated from Richmond High School in 1935. At the Richmond Alumni dinner in July of 2008, he was the oldest graduate.
He was a member of Riverview Congregational Church in South Gardiner. He was a sixty five year member of the Hermon Lodge #32 in Gaxdiner. '
He retired from Bath Iron Works in 1980.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Hanson and her husband, William of Cranston, Rhode Island; a son, Gary T. Alexander and his wife, Donna of Augusta, Maine; a daughter, Ann A. Stinson and her husband, Keith of Richmond, Maine; two sister-in-laws, Mildred Gay and her husband, Warren Gay and Bertha Taylor; ten grandchildren; Laurie Hanson Roberts, Todd Hanson, Richard Hanson, Troy Alexander, Tammy Alexander Roberts, Karen Stinson, Marion Stinson Sullivan, Rachel Stinson Domin, Leanna. Stinson Kiesow and Marlena Stinson Boron; three step-grand children; Hiedi Mayorga, Alexis Estrada, Marvin Estrada (step children of Todd Hanson); fourteen great grand children; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express their gratitude for all the care given by Hospice caregivers, especially to his Hospice nurse, Lori Harris; a special gratitude to Dr. Keating for his exceptional care beyond our expectations to our father; a special heartfelt thanks to his caregiver, Jill Stinson.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 1 to 2pm on Monday, December 29th with a Masonic Service to follow. A funeral service will take place at 2pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring. A reception will take place after the service at the Dresden Richmond United Methodist Church, Richmond.

Alice Call
DRESDEN — Alice M. Call, 83, of Ludwig Road, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at her home.
She was born in East Millinocket on Aug. 25, 1925, the daughter of Harry and Sadie Tarbox. She graduated from Madawaska High School in 1944.
On July 19, 1954, she married Lawrence M. Call Sr. in St. Johnsbury, Vt. They made their home in Dresden.
She was a longtime member of the Bowdoinham Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, on Jan. 24, 1995.
She is survived by two sons, Lawrence Call Jr. of Richmond, and Robert Call and his wife, Ethel, of Dresden; a stepson, Ronald Call and his wife, Sharon, of Greene; two brothers, Gilbert Tarbox and his wife, Ruby, of Richmond, Herbert Tarbox and his wife, Polly, of Gardiner; a sister-in-law, Barbara Tarbox of Oregon; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Burial will take place in the spring.

Francis “Frank” Jean
Litchfield-Francis H. Jean, 77, of Jean’s Way died Saturday, December 20, 2008 after a long illness at his home.
He was born in Topsham on June 29, 1931 the son of Frank and Laurina (Levesque) Jean.
Frank was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp and served his country during the Korean War. Frank worked for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years retiring in1986.
He enjoyed golfing, cribbage, talking, watching the Patriots and being with family. His style of humor will be sadly missed.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, brothers Richard and Neal Jean. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Lucie (Brillant) Jean of Litchfield, daughters Annette Jean and partner Peggy Shopp of Orlando, Fl., Mary Byk and husband John East Lyme Connecticut, son Mark Jean and wife Donna of Litchfield, brothers Al Jean of Port Charlotte Fl, Bernie Jean of Plymouth, MA, and 3 grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Bowdoin-Robert Bruce COOMBS, 65, of Augusta Rd., passed away on NOVEMBER 30, 2008 at MAINE MEDICAL CENTER, PORTLAND.
He was born in Bath on 6/25/1943 the son of HERMAN AND ELLEN ROGERS COOMBS.
Robert was a longtime member of the AMERICAN LEGION-RICHMoND POST 132.
He enjoyed SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, FISHING, CARD GAMES and READING.
Bob proudly served his country in the USAF, US NAVY and worked for BATH IRON WORKS For many years retiring 2006.

Barbara Jean Daniels
Gardiner-Barbara Jean Daniels, 56, of Maple St. passed from this life, with her family by her side, on November 29, 2008 from complications due to cancer at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
She was born on August 19, 1952 in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Grace Speck and the late Edwin Shaw.
Barbara graduated from Cony High School. She felt lucky and proud to have incredible friends and family in her life. She garnered much strength from the love and support they provided. She pushed herself to stay engaged in life through her treatments. When the world said "give up", hope whispered, "try it one more time". She remained active throughout her illness and continued to spend time with those she loved. She felt that humor and good karma were the best medicine.
Barbara enjoyed a wide range of activities; a bird watcher, gardener, artist, an antique collector and loved spending time in her back yard with her grandchildren and her two precious dogs. She knew that being a grandparent was God's reward for growing older. She loved hunting and fishing and has many fond memories of her fishing adventures with her family. Barb always cared about helping others. She was involved in the Gardiner Youth Football League and was instrumental in raising money to ensure the kids had new uniforms or whatever they needed. She volunteered her time to the Heart to Heart Support Group, of which she was an active member, always making sure the troops were not forgotten in their absence.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Gary Daniels, of Gardiner, her daughter, Melissa Lane and her husband Chris of Farmingdale, two sons, Israel Legassie and Jesse Daniels, both of Augusta. She was the proud grandmother-of four wonderful grandchildren; Jaime Lane, Halley Lane, Jevon Daniels and Trysten Legassie. She is also survived by her mother Grace and her husband George Speck and her mother in-law Yvette Daniels of Augusta. She had many siblings who she cherished, who will miss her unconditional love; Daniel and Peggie Speck of Litchfield, Pamela and Charles Plemmons of Augusta, Jane Speck of Augusta, Betty Speck Everett of Palarmo, George and Amy Speck of Augusta, Alfred and Rhonda Speck of Portland, Joseph "Don" Speck of Augusta, James and Elaine Shaw of PA, David and Debbie Shaw of PA, Michael Shaw of PA, Louis Shaw of PA, Kathy and Richie Mcglaughlin of Pa. She is further survived by her husband's siblings Sue and Bill Steward of Manchester, Tom and Pat Daniels of Augusta, and Armand "Jay" Daniels of Norridgewock, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, brother and sister in-laws, close friends and her two pets.
In addition to her father she is predeceased in death by her grandparents Mary and Clarence Hawes, one brother Edwin and many aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 12pm at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery Mt. Vernon Rd. Augusta.
Donations may be made in her name to the Children’s Home for Little Wanderers or the Harold Alfond Cancer Center.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Harold Alfond Cancer Center as well as the nursing staff at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta, for all their care and support through Barb’s illness.

Marjorie Nason
Bath-Marjorie W. Nason, 94, formerly of the Alexander-Reed Rd. Richmond, passed away on November 26, 2008 at Winship Green Nursing Home in Bath.
She was born in Augusta on August 22, 1914 the daughter of Fred and Marion (Estabrook) Welsh.
Marjorie enjoyed reading. She was a very artistic person as well as a social and generous person.
She was a Registered Nurse for Augusta General for many years. Marjorie also worked as a private duty nurse in the local area.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband James Nason on November 23, 2006.
She is survived by her son Gary Nason and wife Carolyn of Richmond, grandchildren Penny Simpson and her husband Dan of Richmond, Katherine Girma and husband Jonathan of Massachusetts and 4 great grandchildren.
Per Marjories request there will not be any funeral services held. Marjorie will be buried next to her husband in the Maine Veterans Cemetery.

Dorothy L. Prout
Brunswick-Dorothy L. Prout, 94, of the Abbagaddassett Rd. Bowdoinham passed into the presence of her savior on Monday, November 24, 2008 at Parkview Hospital with the family present.
She born on April 20, 1914 the daughter of Clifton and Maude Rice. Dot attended South Portland Schools and graduated from high school in 1933.
Dot was a star basketball player all through high school. Dot married the late Harry E. Prout on January 1, 1937. Harry and Dot owned and Operated Merrymeeting Gardens where many kids in this area worked for Dot picking peas for many years. Dot loved children and served in a couple local churches in various ways including; Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and several children’s groups such as Wirly Birds and Pioneer Girls. She also served as camp councilor with Camp Good News and loved to tell kids about Gods love. Dot also loved her flower garden and feeding and watching the birds, knitting crewel, quilt making, and especially 9:30am am coffee times with family for many years.
Dot was predeceased by her husband Harry Prout, sister Eva Garsoe and brother Meldon Rice.
She is survived by her sons Harry C. “Buster” Prout and his wife Carol and David Prout and his wife Polly all of Bowdoinham, sister Eleanore MacPhee of South Portland, grandchildren Barbara Harrison of Denver, Colorado, Ruth Dickey of Papua, New Guinea, and Ryan Prout of Raymond, New Hampshire, great grandchildren Lilyanna and Hannah Dickey, several nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by her family and so many devoted friends.

Charles C. Dow
BRUNSWICK — Charles C. Dow, 89, of Brunswick, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center after a short illness. He had been a resident of Thornton Hall Assisted Living Facility since 2004.
He was born in Portland, a son of Clinton and Bertha (Bell) Dow. He later moved to Jay, where he attended local schools and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1937. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring from the post office in Livermore Falls in 1974 after 36 years. He formerly resided in Livermore Falls, Jay and Winthrop before moving to Topsham in 1999.
On Sept. 20, 1940, he married the former Irene Loon of Winthrop. She predeceased him in 2005.
He was an avid gardener and was known for his beautiful flower gardens. He was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick.
Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Austin of Brunswick and Diane Deane and her husband, James, of Holden, Mass.; a brother, George and his wife, Agnes, of Florida; three grandchildren, Adam Austin of Harpswell, Alan Deane and his wife, Jennifer, of Westborough, Mass., and Andrea Young and her husband, Michael, of Tyngsboro, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years; a sister, Gertrude Belanger of Jay; and a son-in-law, Michael Austin of Brunswick.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick. Burial will be in Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop. There will be no visiting hours at the request of the family.

BARBARA SHIRLEY TRUSSELL EVERSON
DRESDEN - Barbara Shirley Trussell Everson, 83, of Dresden, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, following a brief illness.
She was born in Dresden, Maine May 12, 1925, daughter of Wallace and Nena Trussell.
Barbara attended school in Dresden and graduated from Bridge Academy in 1943. She worked briefly at Commonwealth Shoe in Gardiner, later devoting her time as wife, mother and homemaker.
Barbara married Merton H. Everson on November 1, 1947 in Dresden. They remained in Dresden their entire married life, until his death in 1994. Barbara spent the past 5 years at Richmond Eldercare in Richmond, Maine.
Barbara enjoyed knitting and crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, and visits from her family. She especially enjoyed going out to eat with her sisters to celebrate their birthdays. She also enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends at Richmond Eldercare.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Merton in 1994, brothers Roland and Donald Trussell, both of Pittston, sister Marjorie (Trussell) Paulsen of Oregon on October 25, 2008, and sister-in-law Marjory Trussell of Pittston in June 2008.
She is survived by her son, David of Dresden, daughter, Shirley and her husband David Storkson, Sr. of Dresden, sisters Norma Mansir of Gardiner; Pearl Golden of Pittston, Doris Swasey of Dresden and Clarice Taylor of Dresden and Lake Alfred, Fl., brother Roger Trussell of Haines City, Fl; sisters-in-law Eleanor Everson of Dresden, and Emily Trussell of Pittston; three step-grandchildren Lisa Allen of Augusta, David Storkson, Jr. and wife Heidi of Pittston, and Laurie Geroux and husband Michael of Chelsea, and three great-grand children Amber Allen, Joshua Allen and Justin Geroux. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the nursing staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center, the staff at Augusta Rehabilitation Facility, and especially to the staff at Richmond Eldercare for the excellent care and kindness provided to Barbara and family.
There will be no visiting hours at the request of the family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 15, at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant Street, Richmond at 2p.m. Burial will follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Dresden, beside her husband.

Maria Gertrude Zarowsky
Maria Gertrude Zarowsky, passed away on 8 October at 3:30 in the afternoon. She was known to all her friends as Trudy. Our Mother was born on 28 January 1913 in her beloved city of Aachen, Germany, a place she missed until the day she died. She left Germany in 1953 to join her husband who had immigrated a few years before to Cleveland, Ohio. After a few years of working hard and saving money, they moved to Richmond, Maine where they purchased a farm house on Dingley Road. Mother was ecstatic! She and Father planted huge gardens from which she lovingly canned the winter supply of food. She was ahead of her time - she wandered the fields picking medicinal plants and wild berries, practiced organic gardening and eating, recycled and reused, from the 1950s on. She became a vegetarian in the early 90s. She left a very light footprint on the earth but left a heavy mark encouraging others to respect the earth. She loved playing the piano, listening to classical music, knitting. She was an incredible baker, and had “the touch” in adding herbs and spices to her delicious multi-course meals often shared by a table filled with friends. And in spite of having lived through 2 World Wars, still had a sense of humor. One of her sayings was: “humor is when one laughs in spite of it all.” Our Mother’s wishes were to be cremated and no service. If you would like to remember Trudy, donations to an environmental cause would make her very happy.
Predeceased on 3 October 1968 by her husband Nikola Zarowsky, born in Russia. Still here to remember her are her son John Maichle of San Diego, California; her daughters Maria Kompaniet of Grants Pass, Oregon and Vera Zarowsky of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Her grandchildren, Nicholas, Johnny, Peter, Odilia, Stephen, and great grandchildren Reilly, Marissa, Jada, Lily, and Maggie.

Arline J. Thorne
Richmond-Arline J. Thorne, 81, of Williams St. passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 28, 2008.
She was born on June 27, 1927 in Littleton, Maine the daughter of Albert and Vivian (Cullen) Weed.
Arline worked for many years at the E. T. Burrows of Portland making ammunition boxes during WWII. She also worked at many restaurants in the Portland area for many years. Arline retired in 1989 as a C.N.A. For Maine Medical after 18 years.
She enjoyed reading and particularly time spent with family.
Arline was predeceased by her husband Stanley Thorne and her parents. She is survived by daughters Sandra Chapman and Dan of Richmond, sisters Ruth Connors and husband Chuck of Cumberland Center, Phyllis Sicoli and husband Al of New York, grandchildren Kathy Lord and husband Al of Richmond, Freddie Enman and companion Jenny of North Waterford, Danny Chapman Jr., of Colorado, Donny Chapman and his wife Jen of Richmond, great grandchildren Jeff Lord and wife Kandace, Jesse Lord, Haley Chapman, Katelyn Chapman, AJ Green, great great grandchildren Emma Lord, Ethan Lord and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma Wallentine Talbot
TOPSHAM - Norma Wallentine Talbot, 69, of Middlesex Road died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 after a long illness at Midcoast Hospital with her family at her side.
She was born in Richmond, Maine on January 2, 1939, one of four daughters of Charles and Josephine Wallentine of Bowdoinham, Maine. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1956 and married Rodney L. Talbot of Brunswick in August of that year. They initially lived on Wallentine Road in Bowdoinham, then moved to Mallet Drive in Topsham and eventually settled at Middlesex Road in Topsham. Norma was a member of the Kennebec Art Club, Crusade Capers, and Downeast Yacht Club in Boothbay Harbor. She was an instrument rated, multi-engined private pilot, traveled all through Europe, Greece, Russia, Lithuanian and every state of the United States except for Idaho. She was a skier, boater, enjoyed gardening and decorating her house. In 1989 she also participated in the Trek Across Maine. Surviving are her husband, Rodney L. Talbot of Topsham, and two children, her son Dean Talbot and his wife Kim of Topsham, her daughter Melanie Wintle and her husband Scott Wintle of Hollis; two sisters, Aldona Sekarski and Lo
louise Thorn of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jayme Wintle, Tegan Talbot, Alden Talbot, Dayton Wintle and Reagan Wintle; along with many nieces and nephews. Michael A. Pinkham
Richmond-Michael A. Pinkham, 45, of Leonov Lane passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at his families home.
He was born in France, the son of an American Soldier Paul and Erika (Golz) Pinkham on April 26, 1963.
Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Spec 4. He later worked for several years as a painter at Bath Iron Works.
Mike was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 132 in Richmond. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Linda Pinkham. Mike is survived by his daughter Desire'e of Richmond, son Justin Pinkham of Richmond, brothers Gregory Pinkham of Richmond, Tom Pinkham and his wife Yvonne of Richmond, Peter Pinkham and his wife Sherry of Lisbon, Charlie Pinkham of Richmond, sisters Nancy Merriam of Richmond, Priscilla Trask of Richmond, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vesta Towle Harnett Lord
AUBURN-Vesta Towle Harnett Lord died September 2, 2008. She was born in Topsham,Me.July 1,1914, daughter of Sidney and Annie Hutchins Towle. She married Norman Harnett in 1934. He died August 6, 1961. Later in life she was married to Maurice Lord until his death. She was predeceased by brothers Robert and Clive Towle and sister Viola Towle Bibber. She is survived by her two daughters Katherine Delan and Marjorie Jennings and their families.

Dr. Heather DeForest
BRUNSWICK — Dr. Heather DeForest, of 61 Friendship St., Brunswick, Maine, passed away at Midcoast Hospital on July 24, 2008 following a protracted battle with pancreatic cancer. She and her husband had moved here in August of 2006 after her husband had been offered a position at Midcoast Hospital and the two had fallen in love with the area.
Heather was a member of the University Women's Club of Toronto. She was a patron of numerous charities, including The Defenders of Wildlife, The Sierra Club, and The American Civil Liberties Union.
Favorite activities included reading, swimming, skiing and hiking, that is, virtually all pursuits which might be shared with her seven children. She especially enjoyed the study of geography and the history of World War II.
She was an avid peace activist, most recently having marched with her husband and seven children at Kennebunkport and in Boston. She was an active supporter of Representative Dennis Kuciniches' presidential primary candidacy.
She worked as a nurse in her native Canada for 25 years at various firms, including The Hospital for Sick Children, St. Michael's Hospital and Toronto General Hospital.
She graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine in June of 1989, completed her residency in Family Medicine at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, in Utica, NY and worked as a physician in the Emergency Department at Genesee Hospital, in Rochester, NY until 1999 at which time she and her husband adopted their seven children, and Heather dedicated herself, wholly and completely, to being a mother.
Pre-deceased by her father, Angus MacDonald Dunsby on June 4, 1987, Heather is survived by her loving mother Evelyn Louise (Gasson) Dunsby, her devoted husband, Vaughn, and her adoring children - Julietta Elizabeth (18), Leslie Tatiana (16), Elena Caroline (15), Charles Christopher (13), Sally Irinna (13), John MacKenzie (12), and Kristin Eugenia "Jenna"(10), as well as her much loved dogs, Jasmine, Winnie, Goldie and Meggie.
Services will take place in Bracebridge and in Stratford, Ontario and are to be scheduled at a later date.

Brunswick-Morgan Lee Leask 26 of Woolwich died unexpectedly in Brunswick on July 27 2008. She was born in Brunswick on November 30, 1981. Morgan was well known and loved. Morgan is survived by her mother Penny Leask of Wiscasset, her sister Renee Leask of Dresden, a son James Murphy, daughter Lillian Murphy of Woolwich. Uncles and Aunts Merle and Marcia Leask of Dresden, Paul and Alice Leask of Whitefield, Warren and Sallie Leask of Wiscasset, Frank and Marylou Saunders of Dresden and Emily Pinkham of Woolwich, Morgan loved to fish, snowmobile and to camp. She loved crafting and crocheting. She worked at Dunkin Donuts in Topsham. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath on August 3, 2008 at 1:00p.m. She will be buried next to her grandmother and grandfather Leask.

Shirley LeMont
Auburn-Shirley Elizabeth (Pulsifer) LeMont, 92, of Harpswell, in later years a resident of The Lamp in Lisbon, died at the Hospice House in Auburn on June 29, 2008.
She was born May 16, 1916 in Brunswick, Maine the daughter of Paul and Lenora Pulsifer.
She enjoyed taking oil painting classes and being in a writing group. Shirley also enjoyed being with her family, oil painting, gardening, etc.
She took care of a number of foster children; worked at the State Hospital and then she ran a boarding home of ladies.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband John LeMont, son Barry LeMont, granddaughter Kelli LeMont Tufts; Her parents Paul and Lenora Pulsifer; Brothers Murray, Mahlon and Paul Pulsifer; Sister Ruth Pulsifer Morgan and Christine Pulsifer.
She is survived by son Thomas LeMont and his wife Linda of Eustis; daughters Sandra (LeMont) Hickey and her husband Russell of Gardiner; Jane LeMont and Marilyn Enger of Brunswick, Dolly Luwisch and her husband Henry (Hank) of Livingston, New Jersey; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Brothers: Donald Pulsifer and his wife Carol of Lisbon Falls; Ronald Pulsifer and his wife Rita of Bowdoinham and Richard Pulsifer of Brunswick.

Sherwood Gene Carver
Richmond, Maine – Sherwood Carver, 68, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.
Sherwood was born July 26, 1939 to Weston and Mabel (Hinkley) Carver.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his garden and winter trips to Florida. Sherwood was educated in the Richmond school system. He served his country in the US Army. He was a retired member of the Richmond Fire Department for 32 years, some of those years serving as assistant chief. He was also employed by CMP for 36 years. Sherwood was a member of the Richmond American Legion Post 132, past Master of the Masons, Kora Shrine and the Richmond Sportsmans Club.
Sherwood was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Margaret Rogers. Sherwood is survived by his wife of 33 years Sharon (Foster) Carver of Richmond, two daughters Joline McDonough and Joanne Spencer both of Jacksonville Florida., granddaughters Kristine Holmes of North Dakota, Ashley McDonough and Brandi Spencer of Jacksonville Florida, great grand children Braeden McDonald and Aniyah Holmes of North Dakota and Blake Ballasso of Jacksonville Florida, twin sister Shirley Tourtelotte and companion Francis Lambert, brothers John and Marguerite Carver, Weston and Carol Carver, Leighton and Linda Carver, and Dennis Carver all of Richmond.

Michael R. Demers
Bowdoin-Michael R. Demers, 56, of West Road, Bowdoin, died Wednesday, June 25th 2008 at his home with his family at his side.
He was born in Rhode Island, a son of Roland and Theresa Demers. Both his parents pre-decease him. With his wife, he moved to Maine in 1978. He worked in marketing for Redlon & Johnson Supply and Maine Economic & Community Development. He graduated from Albany Law School, and was a member of the Maine Bar Association. Most recently, he worked for Bowdoin College in the Security Department.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Demers, and his two children, Matthew Demers, a graduate student at Northwestern University, and Therese Demers, a student at Saint Joseph's College.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 67 Frost Hill Avenue, Lisbon Falls, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008. Mass will be followed by a graveside committal service at the West Bowdoin Cemetery on West Road, Bowdoin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Holy Trinity Building Fund, or L.A.C.O. c/o Holy Trinity. L.A.C.O. is a Christian outreach program that supports the food pantry servicing Lisbon, Bowdoin, and Durham.

Gerlad D. Blethen
PITTSTON — Gerald D. Blethen, 63, of Squirrel Haven died on Friday, June 20, 2008, at his residence after a long illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 31, 1944, the son of Frank and Alice (Crafts) Blethen.
He proudly served his country in the Army, serving three tours in Vietnam. He was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, drag racing and building cars.
He worked at Bath Iron Works for more than 25 years as a welder.
He was predeceased by a sister, Sandra; and a brother, Dennis.
Surviving are his wife, Leona of Pittston; two daughters, Shawna Degen and her husband, Barnett Jr., of Manchester, and Lauren Smith of Brunswick; a son, Ted Smith and his wife, Michelle, of Indiana; four grandchildren Olivia of Manchester and Jerry, Cameron and Amber of Indiana; a mother-in-law, Ida Churchill of Pittston; two stepsisters; and a stepbrother.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta.

DRESDEN — Lillian N. Newton, 56, of Bogg Road died on Friday, June 20, 2008, after a long illness.
She was born in Brunswick on Aug. 26, 1951, the daughter of Clarence and Vera (Conley) Carter.
She enjoyed camping, watching horror movies, bird watching, watching SCI FI television and collecting Elvis memorabilia. She especially enjoyed time spent with her husband, children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, George Gage; and two nieces, Vera Carter and Nicole Carter.
Surviving are her mother, Vera Conley of Auburn; her husband of 41 years, Jack Newton of Dresden; four daughters, Candy Blair and her husband, Wayne, of Lewiston, Jackie Lobdell and her husband, Ron, of Kingfield, Sandy White and her husband, Chris, of Poland, and Ann D'Amico and her husband Ray of Clinton, Conn.; three brothers, Ray Carter and his wife, Katie, of Brunswick, Maynard Carter and his wife, Diane, of Poland, and Tommy Carter and his companion, Christine Richards, of Sabattus; three sisters, Patty Chickering and husband, Herb, of Poland, Missy Chabot and her husband, Bob, of Lewiston, Glenna Chickering and her husband, Tommy, of Auburn; 11 grandchildren, Wayne Blair, Mike Blair, Heather Blair, Amber Blair, Brandy Blair, Chris Lobdell, Ron Lobdell III, Nicolas Lobdell, Nathaniel Brayall, Lillian Brayall and Christopher White Jr.; three great-grandchildren; and several, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Louis P. Finamore
Louis Peter Finamore of Cumberland Ctr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2008 after a brief illness.
Lou was Born November 22, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York to Peter and Virginia Finamore.
Lou, an Army Air Force veteran, served his time in the Pacific during WWII in the Fujian and Hawaiian Islands. Later in life, Lou was an active member of the Veterans for Peace organization. After the war, Lou worked for a time at Western Union in NY, were he met Shirley Hope Yahne of Mitchell, South Dakota and the pair married shortly thereafter. Lou’s working career was with the United States Railroad Retirement Board, working in NYC, Massachusetts, and then Portland Maine until retirement in 1980.
Lou is survived by his wife, Shirley, his three children, Leslie Webber of Orange, Ca, Randall of Richmond, ME, Bradley of Ogden, Ut., and siblings Anna Finamore of Long Island, NY, Arnold of Long Island, NY and Richard of Armonk, NY. Lou and Shirley have three grand children, Alex Finamore of Gardiner, Abby Pearson of Cumberland and Natalie Finamore of Ogden Ut.
Lou was a natural purveyor of semi-funny jokes and forever lightened the room with limerick, rhyme and piano. A life long artist, Lou’s paintings of animals and landscapes will forever grace our walls and hearts for generations to come.
A celebration of Lou’s life will take place at the Community House at 179 East Maine Street in Yarmouth, Maine on Friday, June 20, from 4PM to 7PM.
Jeannette S. O'Brien
Brunswick-Jeannette Schools O'Brien, 71, of Brunswick, died May 28, 2008, peacefully at her home after a five-year battle with mesothelioma, a traumatic disease that she fought with courage and grace.
She was born in Houlton on July 28, 1936, the daughter of George and Phyllis Brackett Schools. She spent her childhood in Richmond, graduating from Richmond High School in 1954.
On July 30, 1955, she married William (Bill) L. O'Brien and began a life dedicated to her family.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife and daughter whose goodness permeated all those with whom she had contact. Jeannette was a loving, compassionate woman who received her greatest joy from her children and grandchildren. Although not much of a sports fan living in a house of fanatics, her favorite teams were whichever ones her sons or grandchildren were on, or for which her daughter cheered.
She was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo since moving to Brunswick in 1962 Born with a beautiful voice, she served as a cantor and loved singing in the choir.
Surviving is her husband, Bill, who lovingly took care of her throughout her illness; her mother, Phyllis Schools, of Brunswick; her sister, Marilyn Schools of Newington, CT.; her three sons: Kevin and his son Will of Brunswick; Craig, his wife Pam, and daughters Leah and Hannah of Bowdoin; Kyle, his wife Lisa and son Sean of Broomfield, CO.; her daughter, Coleen Curtis and husband Barry, their sons Kevin and Patrick and daughter Caitrin of Shiloh, NC; her sister-in-law Kay Schools of Richmond; and, her best friend since childhood, Joyce Levesque of Brunswick.
She was predeceased by her father George Schools, Sr. and brothers Charles and George, Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Monday, June 2, 2008 at St. Charles Borromeo Church on McKeen Street in Brunswick with a reception following the service in the Church hall.

Frances M. Carr
Frances M. Carr, 91 years of age, passed away on Thursday, May 29th 2008, at her home in Bowdoinham where she had lived for the last 72 years.
Frances was born on July 26th 1916. She is daughter of the late George and Maryetta Coffren Sedgley and one of seven children. Frances was predeceased by Wallace F. Carr, her husband of 34 years, her sisters Florence Wallace of Bowdoinham, Evelyn Eaton and Barbara McGlew of Seabrook NH, her brothers Guy Sedgley and Spear Sedgley of Bowdoinham.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Mary Frances Hinkley and her husband Clyde L. Hinkley of Richmond and Fort Myers, Florida, her son Larry Wallace Carr and Charlene Fickett of Bowdoinham, Grandson Mark C. Hinkley and his wife Marilyn Hinkley of Bowdoinham, Grandson Adam L. Hinkley and Nadine Hurley of Richmond, Great Grandchildren Jaimee Marie Hinkley and Donald Currie of Winthrop, Mark Spear Hinkley and his wife Radha Hinkley of Industry, Eric Wallace Hinkley of Bowdoinham, Adam T. Hinkley, Aaron Hinkley and Bethany Hinkley of West, Texas, Great Great Grandchildren Christopher and Joseph Currie of Winthrop. Landen and Aaden Hinkley of West, Texas, Chhaya Hinkley of Industry. Frances is also survived by her sister Marjorie Walentine of Bowdoinham, sister in law Helen Moody of Coopers Mills and several nieces and nephews.
Frances graduated from Coombs High School, located in Bowdoinham, in 1934, where she graduated as the class Salutatorian.
Frances worked at the Geltman Estate (the million dollar mansion), located in Auburn. The Prudence Hamilton Home, located in Bowdoinham. Frances worked for 19 years as a twister in the Ames Textile Woolen Mill. Later in life Frances baby sat neighborhood children where they would enjoy making mud pies on her front porch.
Frances was a member of the Senior Citizens Group of Richmond and Bowdoinham.
In early years Frances enjoyed traveling in horse and buggy to the Topsham Fair with her family. She also enjoyed box socials at her school, going to the Bowdoinham town dances with her sisters and Mother, picking wild strawberries and blueberries with her grandchildren, picking lily of the valley and mayflowers, hanging May baskets on her grandsons, riding in the milk truck, helping at H.W. Carr Trucking Company, canning chicken, deer meat and sweet relish each year for the winter months, making toll house and peanut butter cookies, and making banana bread and biscuits for family times at Hinkley Cove. Frances also enjoyed playing flinch with her grandson Adam and a small glass of whiskey each evening before bed.
Frances flew to Texas with her daughter and son in law visiting her grandson Adam for many different events over 15 years. She also enjoyed her yearly visits to Orrs Island to see her life long friend Ruth Card Currier.
Later in life Frances enjoyed sitting on her porch and being visited by many friends and family members.

Evelyn Peck Wolkow
Evelyn Peck Wolkow of Topsham Maine died on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Midcoast Senior Health Center in Brunswick Maine,
She was born in New York City, the daughter of Augusta Greta Sonsky and Jacob Peck.
She attended New York schools, including Brooklyn College.
During the Second World War, she worked with the Women's Land Army of the U.S Crop Corps in Marlboro New York in the Hudson Valley. After the war ended she worked for many years as a secretary and office manager in the private sector.
She was an avid supporter of education, the sciences, nature, the arts and music. She served on a committee to organize the activities of the Co-Op School for pre-school children in Kirkland Washington, which she also helped to administer. In addition she was a volunteer at the Walker Art Museum and the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine. She was also a member of the Friends of Bowdoin and an active member of the Women's Alliance of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick Maine.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always put the needs of her family first and foremost.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Samuel Wolkow of Topsham Maine, a daughter, Michelle Guptill and her husband Charles of Brunswick Maine, a son, Jonathan Wolkow of Saco Maine, three grandchildren, Jessica Ralston and her husband Shaun of Bow New Hampshire, Ryan Guptill of Brunswick Maine, and Kathryn Guptill of Boston Massachusetts. She is also survived by two great grandsons, Andrew and Samuel Ralston both of Bow New Hampshire.
She was predeceased by her brother Sidney R. Peck of Florida.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services.

Norman A. Noble
Bowdoin-Norman A. Noble, 76, of Post Road, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston.
He was born on September 8, 1931 in Blaine, Maine the son of David and Lillian Noble.
Norman proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 23 years, retiring in 1972 as a Master Sergeant. After retirement he worked in Civil Service for Brunswick Naval Air Station, retiring in 1992. Norman then spent his days working and sharing his love of farming with his family and friends.
Norman was predeceased by his parents, sister Betty Dore, brothers Oland and Irvin Noble. He is survived by his beloved wife Dee Noble of Bowdoin, his son Norman Noble Jr. and his wife Karen of Falmouth, daughters Nanci Temple and her husband Fred of Bowdoinham, Lisa Bean and her husband Michael of Leeds, Ingrid Nerney and her fiancée’ Keith Davis of Sabattus, granddaughters Erin Temple, Brenna Temple, Heather Deane, Cassie Benedict, Danielle Lore, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was Grandpa-the Great to great grandsons Aiden Temple and Zarin Deane.

Logan C. Sweet
Bowdoinham-Logan C. Sweet, 6, of Tegans Way passed away unexpectedly May 9, 2008 at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.
He was born on January 22, 2002 in Nashua, New Hampshire, the son of Jon and Carolyn (Arndt) Sweet of Bowdoinham.
Logan was a very active, intelligent and inquisitive child. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including; soccer, snowboarding, swimming, and planting seeds. He especially enjoyed playing with Thomas the Tank Engine, playing on the computer, doing his “moves”; loved Spiderman, numbers, coins, and math; and could build the most amazing structures with Legos and K’Nex. He cherished time spent with his parents, sister, brother, cousins, family, and friends.
Logan was in kindergarten at the Bowdoinham Community School.
He is survived by his parents, sister Jaclyn Sweet and brother Ryan Sweet of Bowdoinham, grandparents Harold Arndt of Freeport, Jim and Dale Holden of Houlton, Norma (Lola) Gagne of Waterville, great grandmother Jessie Brann Hering (GG) of Palmyra, Great Nana Helen Arndt of Freeport, Randy (Grampy) and Robin Sweet of Lincoln, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Logan was predeceased by his grandfather Arthur (Pepere) Gagne.

Alexej Krechkin
Augusta-Alexej Krechkin, 92, formerly of Ridge Road Bowdoinham, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Augusta Rehabilitation with his son by his side.
He was born on April 10, 1915 in Maykop, Russia the son of Alexej and Daria Krechkin.
Alexej worked as a color fast technician in New Jersey before moving to Maine. Once here, he worked as a cattle farmer for many years.
He enjoyed any auctions, horse racing, and especially his granddaughter’s horse shows.
Alexej was predeceased by his parents and a son Victor Krechkin. He is survived by his son Alex Krechkin and his wife Sharon of Augusta, granddaughter Cortney Krechkin, step son Andrei Krechkin of Dresden, and many step grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd at 10am at St. Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Church. Burial will take place in Richmond Cemetery.

Malcolm L. Jewell
Malcolm Leslie Jewell, 87, of Fisher Rd., Bowdoinham, Maine died Tuesday, April 15 at Mid Coast Memorial Hospital in Brunswick after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family members at the time of his death.
Malcolm (variously known as Mal and MLJ to his friends) was born on April 24, 1920 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter he and his parents, John Poland Jewell and Bertha Fisher Irish Jewell, moved to Wellesley where they spent the next several decades. Malcolm graduated from Wellesley High School in the class of 1938. He recalled a youthful gift of a movie projector and remembered charging neighborhood children straight pins as an admission fee to come view his collection of films. Malcolm had an egg route in Wellesley, delivering fresh eggs from the Sedgeley farm in Bowdoinham which were mailed up to Wellesley each week. From an early age the youthful Malcolm, sheparding his younger sister Elizabeth, would take the train to Bowdoinham to spend school vacations with his grandparents, Dr. Isaac C. Irish and Gramma Josie Fisher Irish. Dr. Irish commanded a dry wit and in later life Malcolm enjoyed sharing anecdotes of his grandfather’s stories with the younger family generations. In the summer the whole family would move to the family farm on Fisher Road, a farm built by great grandfather T.W. Fisher in the 1840s. Visit www.link75.org/bhm to read the early farm history. These early experiences on the farm, haying with horse and wagon and swimming in the copious feldspar quarries located on the property, would make an indelible impression on Malcolm—the farm was his most beloved location on earth. One summer at age 14, Malcolm broke his leg. He employed his convalescence in teaching himself to play the guitar, adding the harmonica and a talent for yodeling as time went on. He loved the early cowboy songs, the style of Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Ritter, and learned Chisholm Trail, Wabash Cannon Ball and multiple verses of many other songs over the years. Malcolm developed a fascination for motors, at one time collecting 6 automobile carcasses in the backyard in Wellesley and working tirelessly at disassembling and reassembling the machines. This led to the construction of his first tractor built on an early Ford chassis and linking two transmissions end-to-end. His love of tractors, particularly bringing older tractors into operating usage, remained a lifelong fascination. In 1938 Malcolm enrolled at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, the third generation of Jewell men to attend Bates. There he met Lucille Leonard of Providence, RI who would become Mrs. Jewell in August of 1942. Malcolm earned a double major in Chemistry and Physics, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1942. Oldest child, daughter Nina Lee, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, the first home of the newlyweds where Malcolm had his first employment after graduation. This ended shortly with his drafting into the Navy in 1943. His three years of service took place on the east coast serving as a Navy scientist and radar instructor. Immediately upon his discharge in 1946 he gathered Lucille, Nina Lee and newly born son Stephen Putnam and, in chilly April 1946, they moved to Keewaydin Farm where he spent the next 62 years. Malcolm became a research chemist at Bates Manufacturing mill in Lewiston. His daily commute coincided with John Gould’s daily radio broadcast (the Gould farm was located enroute in Lisbon) and Malcolm would routinely honk his horn as he drove by, a signal to Lucille who would be tuned in to the Gould broadcast back on the farm. Malcolm’s proudest achievement at Bates was the development of “disciplined fabric”, the world’s first no-iron cotton. Soon the Jewell women were eagerly sewing with some of the early samples of silky wash-and-wear cotton. In 1957 Malcolm joined the research division of S.D. Warren Company in Westbrook, Maine. His next 33 years were spent in both the “wet end” and the coating labs at S. D. Warren. He was very proud of the fine high quality papers that were S. D. Warren’s hallmark. Back in Bowdoinham, Malcolm joined the Village Masonic Lodge, serving in various leadership capacities at the Lodge over the next several decades (his 59th year of membership was 2007). He discovered a penchant for both bookkeeping and investing, serving as the Village Lodge treasurer for many years. At S. D. Warren he helped found the “Chowder and Marching Society” which followed the NAIC investment club guidelines. There and through study of the Value Line Survey, he developed (and was still refining) his stock picking skills. These same skills would be utilized at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick, Maine, where he and Lucille both actively served and worshipped for many years. The Jewell family was still growing. In 1949 Jeffrey Fisher Jewell was born (deceased in 1950), Katherine Jewell Fiori was born in 1951 and Jeremy Chase Jewell was born in 1953 (deceased 1967). At first the farm was a small dairy operation and Lucille had a weekly butter route. Gradually Malcolm switched to beef cattle and “Jewell’s Genuine Barnyard Dressing” made its debut. As the children grew up, haying became a major summer occupation for all, and a variety of Bowdoinham youngsters and Jewell grandchildren remember their summers of hard work and responsibility harvesting bales on many Bowdoinham fields. Getting your tractor’s driving permit was a major rite of passage for the youthful workers. Serving on the Bowdoinham School Board, it was a proud moment in 1955 when Malcolm helped Bowdoinham celebrate the dedication of the new Bowdoinham Community School. The school was built with volunteer labor and a unique community funding program, an annual 4th of July Barbecue. Bowdoinham owned the school outright and debt free in just 7 years. Malcolm loved his role of selling “sodie pop” at the Mason’s annual booth. His deep belief in the importance of education led Malcolm to serve on the investment committee for the Brunswick Area Student Aid Scholarship committee. He was still a member of the board at the time of his death. The preservation of the farm for posterity became an important objective during Malcolm’s later years. When he and Lucille granted a conservation easement of Keewaydin Farm’s fields and woodlands to the Maine Farmland Trust in 2004, they were joined by the whole family in rejoicing for the permanent protection of their beloved piece of Maine (see story at www.mainefarmlandtrust.org Fall 2004 newsletter archives). In later years Malcolm and Lucille enjoyed an annual vacation trip with their close friends Tom and Virginia Hayden (fellow Bates ‘42 classmates). Other than these explorations to Europe, out West and to the Caribbean, Malcolm did not like to leave the farm. He earned the family nickname of “The World’s Most Flexible Man” as an ironic reference to his preference for home. Malcolm was quick to embrace both the television age (recording favorite programs like Matlock) and the computer age. Writing programs (learning computer languages and systems), using e-mail for family contact, researching stocks on line—all of these were sources of absorbing interest. On the Sunday before his death, Malcolm had 23 windows open on his new computer. He and old friend Russell Hewett entered cribbage tournaments in Winthrop, Maine. His cribbage skills were honed with daily cutthroat competition with Lucille. Malcolm and Lucille also shared a love of a good mystery story. In later years Malcolm referred to himself as a curmudgeon. He certainly had a gift for the appropriate aphorism for every situation. He believed “Waste is Sin”, “You can’t run a powerful machine with no fuel” (his belief that regular meals were necessary. Malcolm enjoyed good food but said that as long as he had peanut butter and crackers he would never starve), “Safety first, last and always”, and, from Dr. Irish, “We will do the best we can.” His quick wit and Yankee ingenuity stayed with him to the end. Malcolm was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Jewell Ballard and his sons Jeffery Fisher Jewell and Jeremy Chase Jewell. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucille Leonard Jewell, his children Nina Mendall and spouse Peter Mendall of Litchfield, Maine, Stephen Jewell and spouse Patricia Braley Jewell of Barre, MA, and Katherine Fiori and partner James Tierney of Auburn, ME, grandchildren Kimberley Mondonedo and spouse Jude Mondonedo, Peter L. Mendall and spouse Amy Mendall, Nicholas Fiori and partner Amanda Hoover, Andrew Fiori and spouse Melissa Fiori, Emily Ziomek and spouse Dan Ziomek, Carrie Jewell and partner Mark Conlon, and Susanna Jewell and spouse James E. Barrett IV, and great grandchildren, J’rae Mendall, Sam Max Mondonedo, Calen Mendall, Sahja Mendall, Tate Mendall, Cassidy Howard, Aiden Fiori, Sebastian Fiori, Nathaniel Ziomek and James Edward Barrett V (born the day Malcolm died). A memorial service and reception will be held at the Unitarian Universalist church on Pleasant Street in Brunswick at 2:00 on Sunday, April 20th. Philomene O. Jalbert
Lewiston-Philomene O. Jalbert, 79, of Oak St. Passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She was born on August 13, 1928 in Lewiston the daughter of William and Marie(Lachance) Roberge.
Philomene enjoyed cooking, Square dancing, taking care of her 34 foster children and particularly family.
She was predeceased by her parents, previous husbands and love of her life Donate Jalbert, Albert Roberge, brothers Henry, Ruben and Morris Roberge, sisters Ann Nolin, Clair Souer and Malene Duchette.
She is survived by sons Albert Roberge of Litchfield, William Roberge of California, Michael Jalbert of Texas, daughters Linda Morris of Florida and Corinne Roux of Florida.

George K. Hunter
George Kirkpatrick Hunter, 87, died peacefully of Alzheimer’s disease at his home in the Highlands, Topsham, April 10 2008, with his family around him.
Born in 1920 in Glasgow, he was the only child of Samuel and Mary Hunter. He attended school in Glasgow and went to Glasgow University to pursue a degree in English Literature. He served in the British Navy, first on Arctic convoy protection duty, and then working in Sri Lanka as a code breaker. After the war, he took his Ph. D. in English literature at Balliol College, Oxford. He taught at Hull, Reading, and Liverpool universities before founding the English department at the new University of Warwick. In 1975 he moved to Yale University, where he was the Emily Sanford Professor of English, and Chairman of the Renaissance Studies program. He retired in 1991. A member of the British Academy and the American Academy, he was the author of many books and articles about Renaissance literature, including the Oxford History of English Literature volume on Shakespeare and Jacobean Drama.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shelagh Hunter; three children: Mary, of Lewiston Maine, and her husband James Parakilas; Andrew, of Addlestone, Surrey, UK, and his wife Martina, and Ruth, of Coventry, UK; and seven grandchildren: Alexander and Jacob Parakilas, Neil, Caitlin, Niamh and Claire Hunter, and George Hunter.
Ruth C. Galarraga
Portland – Ruth C. Galarraga, 40, of Portland, died at her home on March 26th, 2008.
She was born in Augusta on January 31, 1968, the daughter of Dr. Efrain C. and Joyce C. (Lemanski) Galarraga.
She graduated with honors from Catherine McCauley High School in 1986. She went on to attend S.M.V.T.I, graduating with a nursing degree.
Ruth worked for many years as a registered nurse at New England Rehabilitation and also later for the family business, Maine Vocational and Rehabilitation Associates.
She enjoyed bingo, music, movies, travel, gambling, spending time with her family and pets.
Ruth is survived by her significant other Mark Porter; brothers John and significant other Patricia, Todd, Charles and his wife Mary, and Danny; nieces Kristina, Katie, and Ava; nephews Matthew, Johnny, Avery, Emmanuel, and Gabriel; aunt Janice and her husband Willy; cousin Jennifer; and sister in law Betty. She was predeceased by her parents.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Augusta, on Monday, April 7th at 11am. Burial will take place in Holyoke, MA at St. Jerome Cemetery at a later date.

Richmond-Earl H. Scott Jr. “Ralphie”, 49, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home on March 25, 2008.
He was born on June 17, 1958 in Lewiston, the son of Earl and Helen (Peaseas) Scott.
Earl had been in severe pain for over twenty years due to curvature of the spine. He attended school in Monmouth. He was a very big warm hearted person who always had his doors and arms open for everyone no matter who you were. His house was the house you end at for all his friends and family. He enjoyed his friends a great deal. He loved to go on trips with his family. He especially liked to visit the great mountains of New Hampshire and Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor. His favorite store to shop at was Wal-mart and he always watched the sci-fi channel. E
arl was predeceased by his father Earl Scott Sr. and brothers Hanford Scott and Merle Scott. He is survived by his mother Helen Scott of Winthrop, his wife of twenty-six years Sheila Scott of Richmond, three sons Shawn Crocker of Augusta, Christopher Scott and fiancé Shannon Stewart of Richmond, Justin Scott and wife Melanie of Richmond, grandchildren Karlie Grace Scott of Farmingdale, Alex Hammond of Richmond, Jake McPhee of Waldoboro, sisters Dolly and husband Larry of Monmouth, Pearlene Colby of Gardiner, Hazel and husband Donald Bowden of Gardiner, brothers Jerry Scott and wife Maureen of Augusta, Lee Scott of Lewiston, Andy Scott and wife Judy of Sabattus, Larry Scott and wife Doreen of Monmouth, half brother Lendal Scott of Lewiston, he is also survived by his two dogs, who went everywhere with him Rosco and Gizmo, many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Verona E. Lewis
Dresden – Verona “Roni” Elaine Pinkham Lewis, 80, of Dresden, died at her home on March 27th, 2008.
She was born in Richmond on January 29, 1928, the daughter of Edward C. and Mildred (Hodgdon) Pinkham.
Verona graduated from Richmond High School in 1945. She then married Melvin Lewis on August 7th, 1949.
She traveled for many years with her husband with the U. S. Air Force. They retired to Dresden in 1966. In her younger years she loved taking camping and fishing trips with her husband and children. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, reading, crafts, and crosswords. Her family and her Lord Jesus Christ were the center of her life. Verona was a lady of faith and prayer and had a beautiful, daily relationship with her Lord and Savior; she shared his love with others, and this was evident to all who knew and loved her. She was a member of Church of Christ, Augusta.
She is survived by her beloved husband Melvin; son Peter J. Lewis and wife Patty Sue of Dresden; daughter Deborah A. Lewis McAllister and husband Jeffrey of W. Bath; granddaughters Chelsie Irene and Kiara Elaine Lewis of Dresden, Rebekka A. McAllister Jackson and husband Aron of Charlotte, NC; grandson Justin M. McAllister of Norfolk, VA; great granddaughter Alaynah B. Jackson of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by brothers Edward C. Pinkham Jr. and Clayton N. Pinkham; and sister Annie Louise.
At Verona’s request services at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery will be private.

John F. Rollins
ARROWSIC — John Flett Rollins died Tuesday, March 18, 2008.
He was born in Quiringua, Guatemala, on May 27, 1924, the son of Charles E. Rollins and Hildagarde W. Flett, while his father was expatriated to work for the United Fruit Co. After his father died of malaria his mother returned the family to New England, where he grew up.
He enlisted in the Army during World War II and was part of the invasion force of New Guinea and the Philippines and served in the occupation of Japan.
When he returned home from World War II, he earned a bachelor of science degree in geology from the University of New Hampshire and a master of science degree from the University of Nebraska. After he graduated, he accepted a job with a major oil company and moved to Marcaibo, Venezuela, where he worked until returning to the U.S. to complete a doctorate in geology from the University of Nebraska. After graduate school, he worked in executive positions for Chevron in oil exploration on virtually every continent.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, he was a licensed pilot with a multi-engine instrument rating. He was a competitive pistol shooter with wins around the world. He was a skilled gunsmith and an enthusiastic ham radio operator as well as a builder of antique transmitters and receivers. Not forgetting his childhood roots in rural New Hampshire, he was an accomplished outdoorsman and trapper.
One of his greatest gifts was his willingness to share and teach what he knew with others.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Arrowsic; a nephew, Peter, of Massachusetts; and a niece, Joan, of California.
According to his wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bowdoinham-Luella E. Pratt, 84, of the Preble Rd., passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.

Ronald M. Demeny
WISCASSET— Ronald Michael Demeny, 71, of Bradford Road, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at home after a delayed, but ultimately lost, battle with cancer.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1936, in Passaic, N.J., the son of Michael and Rose Tambor Demeny.
He had a happy childhood in Garfield, N.J., and always carried good memories of his life starting there.
In high school he became one of the football team's star players, but ultimately turned down a football scholarship to join the Navy after graduation in 1954.
Shortly thereafter, he decided to join ranks with Bath Iron Works, and ended up spending another 23 years of his life there before retiring there as a 1st class mechanic in July 2000.
He is survived by Natalie Demeny, his best friend and wife of 35 years; their son Ryan, of Alna, and his stepchildren, Norman Holbrook, Jill Holbrook-Peters, and Marji H Schoeneman; his son Michael of San Jose, Calif.; his daughters Mary Beaulieu of Westbrook and Julie Harlow of South Portland; his children with Jacqueline Jones Smith; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Michelle,

Richard H. Dow
Richard H. Dow, 61, of Topsham died peacefully at home on March 3, 2008.
Richard was born in Jamaica Plain Massachusetts, August 2, 1946, the son of the late Frank and Shirley Dow and was raised in Carmel, Maine.
He graduated from Hermon High School in 1964. He served 20 years in the US Navy, retiring as a Senior Chief in 1988. He worked for the past 19 years at TMA/L3 Communications in Bath in support of Supship.
Richard enjoyed his work, time with family, vacationing at Sebago Lake and was an avid Nascar fan. He also enjoyed attending local stock car races throughout Maine and New England with his brother-in-law, George Hillman of Bowdoin.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda Dow of Topsham; his daughter Kelly Fike and her husband Rory of Brunswick; his son Randy Dow and his wife Amy of West Palm Beach, Florida; and grandsons Colby and Bailey Fike of Brunswick and Alex Dow of West Palm Beach, Florida.
The family would like to thank the staff of CHANS/Hospice for their care and support over the past few months.
Memorial visitation will take place noon-1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant St., Richmond, where a memorial service will take place at 1 p.m.

Ralph A. Strout
Gardiner-Ralph A. Strout, 76, died on February 29, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Togus Division after a long illness.
He was born on November 14, 1931 in Richmond, Maine the eldest son of Richard A. and Gertrude M. (Moore) Strout.
He is pre-deceased by his wife, Kathleen (Kay) A. Strout and parents. He is survived by his daughter, Amy K.S. Hogan and son-in-law, Richard W. Hogan, of Brunswick; son, Matthew A. Strout of Winthrop, sister, Phyllis S. Pushard of Bangor; brother, Richard A. Strout of Richmond, two grandsons, Patrick and John, and two nephews, Robert E. Pushard, Jr. of Dedham and Richard D. Pushard of Bar Harbor.
Ralph graduated in 1950 from Richmond High School and earned a degree in Mortuary Science from the New England Institute of Anatomy, presently known Mount Ida College, in 1962. Ralph actively served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Military Police during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge in 1954. Ralph was employed as a funeral director at Amesbury-White funeral home in Gardiner for over thirty years. Prior to working as a funeral director he also worked for the Boston and Maine Rail Road. Ralph was a member of the Masons, Village Lodge #26 in Bowdoinham.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 7th at 10am at the Fr. LeClair Maine Veterans Cemetery Augusta with military honors.

Albert L. Wagner
Brunswick-Albert Leonard Wagner, 91, of Willow Grove Rd., died Saturday, February 23, 2008, peacefully at Mere Point Nursing Facility in Brunswick, Maine surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 15, 1916 in Manchester, New Hampshire son of George and Nellie Sjostrom Wagner. He was educated in Manchester N.H. Schools and graduated from Central High School.
He married Margaret Esther Bourque on June 30th, 1941 and they had two daughters, Barbara and Betty.
He was employed for twenty-six years by National Cash Register Company in Manchester, N.H. and Bangor, Maine. He also worked for Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. In 1982 he retired from Mercy and he and Peggy moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, dividing their next twenty years between there and Pemaquid Point, Maine. They moved back to Maine in 2003 to be near Betty’s family.
Al enjoyed golf, swimming, water skiing and fishing. He will be remembered by many residents of Willow Grove as the man who rode his adult tricycle day and night, summer and winter. His greatest love was time spent with his family and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and his five great-grandchildren.
Al lived the last two years of his life at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center, both in The Garden and Mere Point, where he received kind and devoted care. He will be remembered most there for his love of music and singing and the beanie hats he wore all the time.
He is survived by Peggy, his wife of more than sixty-six years. His daughter, Barbara, and her husband Brent Ekstrom of Florida and Brunswick, Maine. His daughter, Betty, and her husband Dr. Michael McNally of Brunswick, Maine. His grandson, Scott Kelley, and his companion Dena of Reston, Virginia. Granddaughters, Kathryn Marro, and husband Joseph of Brunswick, Maine and Elizabeth Pinkham, and husband Gregory of Bowdoinham, Maine. He will be especially missed by his great-grandchildren, Zoe, Michael, Joseph, Nicholas and Luke.
A memorial service will be held at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center on Saturday, March 1st, at 11 a.m. with Father Edward Sheehan officiating.

Stanley "Tom" E. Durrell
Brunswick-Stanley "Tom" E. Durrell, Sr. 70 of Summer St. passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Parkview AMC.
He was born on September 9, 1937 in Boothbay the son of John and Marion (Nicholes) Durrell.
He was a self employed painter and installed drywall for over 50 years in the local area.
Tom enjoyed morning coffee at McDonald's in Topsham with his friends. He also enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and reading Uncle Henry's from cover to cover.
He was predeceased by his siblings Velda Wilkins, Lorraine Douglass, Jane Aresenault and Ronald Page. Tom is survived by his beloved wife Priscilla Durrell of Brunswick. daughter Kathy Mercer and husband Jack of Kittery, son Stanley " Tommy"Jr. and his wife Kathy of Portland, daughters Belinda Carter and husband Rob of Topsham,Cindy Lamoreau and husband Terry of Bowdoinham, Diana Gosselin and husband Daniel of Brunswick, Deirdre Owens and husband Eric of South Carolina. Brothers Lloyd and wife Pat Durrell of Woolwich and David Durrell of Arrowsic, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

South GARDINER - DELSIE E. (NICKLESS) MORSE—Delsie (Nickless) E. Morse died in Maine General Medical Center, Augusta, Maine Feb. 11, 2008, at the age of 92. She was born June 2, 1915, in Unity, Maine, the sixth out of fifteen children of parents, Martin and May (Stearns) Nickless. On June 15, 1934, she married Harold S. Morse of Palermo, Maine. They were married for over 64 years until his death in 1998. A true survivor, Delsie weathered the great ice storm of ‘98 alone in her home in Gardiner only to narrowly escape from a fire that destroyed her home on April 1, 2002. Delsie will always be remembered by friends and family as being a character – full of life, giving love, telling jokes and spreading laughter to everyone. Later she moved to Dionne Commons in Brunswick where she resided with her 2nd husband, Weston Rice of Boothbay Harbor, ME until 2006. She is survived by her four children, Marlene Shaw, Gardiner, ME; Carlton Morse (wife Rosalind), Elephant Butte, New Mexico; Wayne Morse (wife Carolyn), Quincy, MA; Brian Morse, Topsham, ME; her son-in-law Forrest Powell, Oakland, ME; and her daughter-in-law Judy Morse, Bowdoinham, ME; her brother, Vernon Nickless, Crestline, California; 16 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 4 great- great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Harold S. Morse daughter Mildred Powell of Oakland, ME, and her son-in-law Leo Shaw of Gardiner, ME.
In addition to being a wife and mother, she was a hard worker her entire life having been employed by Maine Co.'s Hathaway Shirt Factory, Waterville; Lipman's Poultry, Augusta; Hillcrest Poultry, Lewiston and Stevens Training Center in Hallowell as a cook. In 1971 she and her husband retired from Cole-Hersey, South Boston, MA and moved to Gardiner. Together, she and her late husband, Harold Morse made over 700 Embroidered Rag dolls that they sold at flea markets. She was a Christian, and along with her family, had owned a cottage at the Maine District Church of the Nazarene Campgrounds in Richmond, Maine, where they loved attending the camp meetings and taking vacations at their cottage. She was a member of The Church of the Nazarene, Gardiner, Maine for over 30 years.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene Main St. Bowdoinham on Saturday, February 16th at 2pm. Spring interment will be in the family lot at Smith Cemetery, Palermo, Maine. Pastor Edgar “Alan” Kipp
Pink Hill, NC – Pastor Alan Kipp, 67, of Pink Hill died Feb. 11, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Born December 4, 1940 in Sharon, CT to Richard and Elizabeth Kipp, he had resided in Pink Hill for the last 18 months, moving there from Dresden, Maine. He was a veteran of the U.S Army, serving from 1958 – 1961 with a deployment to Korea.
Prior to retiring in August of 2006, he was Senior Pastor at Dresden Community Church in Dresden, Maine for 26 years. He demonstrated his love for God by serving the community with a heart of compassion for all people. He also had a soft spot for stray cats. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and skeet shooting.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pastor Carol A. Kipp, of Pink Hill; three sons, Michael A. Kipp and his wife, Jenny, of Dresden, Jeffrey W. Kipp and his wife, Erin, of Portsmouth, NH, and Richard B. Kipp of Westbrook, ME; three grandchildren, Matthew A. Kipp of Bristol, CT, Benjamin Kipp of Portsmouth, NH, and Julie Kipp of Dresden, several step-grandchildren and a sister, Sandra Kipp, of Puntagorda, FL.
Visiting hours will be Sat. February 16th from 6 – 9 pm at Kincer Funeral Home. A “Celebration of Life” service will be held Sunday, February 17th at 2 pm at Dresden Community Church, 633 Gardiner Rd., Dresden. Burial with military honors will be in the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta on Tuesday, February 19th at 1pm with Military Honors.

Robert A. Hart
South Carolina-Robert “Bob” Arthur Hart of Fort Mill, S.C. passed on peacefully on Thursday, February 07, 2008 at Pineville Rehab and Living Center in Fort Mill, North Carolina after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born in Brunswick, Maine on March 12, 1935 the son of Leroy and Irene (Williams) Hart and was educated at Brunswick High School. He resided in the Topsham, Brunswick and Bowdoinham region before later relocating to the Florida and South Carolina area.
Before his retirement and illness he worked over the years for Granite Paving Co. Goodwin Chevrolet, The Freeport Inn and the Carriage House in North Carolina. He taught auto body repair at Vo-Tech in Leesburg, Florida where he was also an auto body shop manager at Lake Datsun.
He enjoyed roller skating, horseshoes, playing guitar and singing country music, and he enjoyed restoring automobiles. He loved coming to Maine in the summer and eating lobsters and seafood, hot dogs in the park, and going to Fatboy Drive-In Restaurant in Brunswick.
He was a hardworking, generous, and honest man who always had a smile for everyone. He was a devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather.
He was predeceased by 3 brothers, James, Donald, and Bernard Hart.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years Barbara (Page) Hart of Fort Mill, S.C and their 8 children Cindy Breton of Lisbon, Candy Couture of Bowdoin, Lorna Hart of New Durham, NH, Robert Hart Jr. of Concord, NH, Rusty Hart of Inman SC, Michael Rockwell of Gorham, Forrest Rockwell of Fort Mill SC, and Lisa Altieri of Charlotte NC, 3 sisters Beverly Chesnutt of Las Vegas, NV, Ruth Favreau of Topsham and Joyce Klimko of Richmond, 2 brothers Richard Hart of Topsham and Roger Hart of Brunswick, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant St., Richmond, ME. Burial will take place in the Spring in Brunswick.

Susan M. Ober
Brunswick-Susan M. Ober, 57, of Thomas Point Rd. died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Mid Coast Hospital.
She was born on June 28, 1950 in Pennsylvania the daughter of William and Leona (Wilmer) McMullen.
Susan met a sailor named Will Ober in 1967 and married the day after Christmas that year.
She was the office manager for the Maine Table Company in West Bath.
She was an avid quilter. She enjoyed bingo and taking trips with her husband Will. The greatest joy in her life, however, was her family; they above all were her priority.
In addition to her husband Will of 40 years, she is survived by her daughters Kristen and Tami, grandchildren Amanda, Will, Christen and Michael.
Family services will be private.

Obituary
Richmond-Caroline E. Thurlow, 66, of Sled St. passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday. February 5, 2008 at Maine Medical Center. Portland.
She was born in Richmond on May 11, 1941 the daughter of Edward and Merilna (Sidelinger) Coughlin.
Caroline worked at Etonic Shoe in Richmond for over 38 years. After they closed she worked for Eastland Shoe in Freeport before retiring.
She enjoyed sports, soap operas, crossword puzzles and especially time spent with her grandchildren.
Caroline was predeceased by her parents, Brothers Linwood Pushard, Edward Coughlin, Carroll Coughlin and a sister Lois Bourgoin. She is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years Paul Thurlow of Richmond, daughters Susan and Carol Thurlow of Richmond, sister Louise Snow and her husband Edward of Pittston, brother Patrick Coughlin and his wife Debbie of Richmond, grandchildren J.J. and Kalah Patterson of Richmond, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, February 11th from 11:30 to 1:30 at Kincer Funeral Home with a funeral service commencing at 1:30pm also at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in Richmond.

Patrick “Pat” Leroy McMullen
Bowdoinham-Patrick L. McMullen, 73, of the Fisher Rd. passed away on Monday, January 21, 2008 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.
He was born in Biddeford on March 17, 1934 the son of Samuel and Luria (Langevin) McMullen. Pat graduated from Thornton Academy in 1952.
Pat proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an electrician, during the Korean War. During his stint in the military he was also the light weight boxing champion.
He married Margaret “Margie” Gile on March 15, 1959. Together they started Rock-A-Dry diaper service in 1962. And later started Bowdoinham Linen Service, which is still in operation today.
Pat was 47 year member of Bowdoinham Village Lodge #26 Masons, the Council, Commandry and the Chapter. He was also a member of the Kora Shrine, American Legion, Topsham, Jay Cee’s, past Cub Scout Leader, Eastern Star Electa Chapter #2 of Bowdoinham, Past advisory board member of Assembly #6 of Bath, 3 year member of the planning board for the town of Bowdoinham, Grand Cross Rainbow Girls and a past advisory board member of Parkview Hospital, Brunswick.
He enjoyed hunting, flying and being in the woods.
Pat was predeceased by his parents, brothers Edward McMullen, Samuel McMullen, and Pete McMullen. He is survived by his beloved wife Margie McMullen of Bowdoinham, daughter Patricia McMullen of New Hampshire, son Gile McMullen of Bowdoinham, daughters Beth Owens of Virginia, Amy Merritt of Bowdoinham, brother Richard McMullen of Saco, sister Polly Burnham of Florida, 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, January 25th from 4 to 7pm, with a Masonic Service being performed at 6pm at Kincer Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 26th at 2pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in the Village Cemetery.

Charles B. Ayer
Charles Brenton Ayer passed on Thursday January 17th from complications of cancer. Charlie passed away peacefully at home with his family and friends by his side. His final view from his comfortable sunroom was of his much beloved Kennebec River that had been his favorite spot since childhood.
Charlie was born on March 17th 1945 in Bath Maine to Brenton Emerson Ayer and Julia Patten Cole Ayer.
He graduated from Morse High School in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in 1968. He served on Coast Guard vessels and was later stationed at Southwest Harbor Maine. He was a medical corpsmen.
After his discharge he attended Beal College in Bangor for a period of time and then returned to Bath where he worked briefly At Bath Iron Works and then as a surveyor for the State of Maine. He and his Dad also had an eel business for a period of time.
Charlie was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed trips with his wife Sue and taking his family for boat rides. He also loved spending time at his hunting camp in Woolwich.
Charlie is survived by his wife Susan Ayer, formally Susan Brown of Camden Maine. His daughter and son-in-law Heidi and Maarten Zwaan of Phippsburg and their children Anthony, Ethan, Cody and Owen. His sister and husband Marilyn and Adriel Mason of Arizona and their children Julie Moore and Angela Espinoza and their families.
He also is survived by three stepchildren and families. Lance Graney, Leila his wife and children, Leilian, Alden and Dylan of New Jersey. Brant Dadaleares of No. Windham Maine and Todd Dadaleares and his wife Nancy and son Uther of Portland Maine.
There will be a celebration of life and his homecoming to the Lord at the Bath Senior Citizens Center on Saturday January 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM.
